Full disclosure:  We're on each others flists. And of course I'm a fan.
Pairings: Mostly Fraser/Kowalski, with additional pairings.
Style and strengths:  Kink! Bingo! Memes!
An amazingly prolific writer (she'll probably post a new story before you finish the end of this profile), Helens is a welcome addition to DS/C6D. She has written most of her Fraser/Kowalski pieces for kink memes and kink bingo, so many of them are very "I'll be in my bunk" hot. The stories themselves cover a wide range of moods, from romantic first-time, to funny and warm established relationship fics, to dark stories that are as incredible as they are painful to read. What they all have in common is insightful and convincing characterization; her Fraser and Kowalski voices are feel very in-character, even as she's exploring and pushing the boundaries of their relationship.

Other DS/C6D activity: BSG (including this excellent story involving Leoben, Anders and pyramid), Canadian RPF, Gunless, and Wilby Wonderful, plus assorted crossovers with Californication, and Shattered. And even while I was writing this, she posted a fantastic Eastwick/BSG crossover.  She also mods or co-mods a number of comms, including the [community profile] duesouth and the delightful [community profile] dreamsheep.

Some favourites:

Have You Performed At This Establishment Before? (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17, 5153 words, written for the duesouth_kink meme)
Undercover!Ray's in a punk rock band, and gets a surprise visitor at one of the concerts. Along with being OMG-HOT, this one has some lovely roleplay banter, great Ray voice, and comes with a nice twist at the end.
Excerpt... )

Branta Canadensis (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski, R, 1565 words) Ray's angry that Stella can remarry while he cannot. Angst, but with a sweet ending.
Excerpt... )

I'll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours (Due South, F/K, NC-17, 6032 words, written for kink_bingo) The Fight Club story. The writing is so evocative that you feel every bit of the pain, during and after the fight. Her Fraser and Kowalski voices are spot-on here; you get why Fraser would be doing this, and Kowalski's desire to protect (and then help) Fraser makes me want to hug him.
Excerpt... )

A Failure Of Survival Skills (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17, 2390 words, written for the duesouth_kink meme) A post-breakup story, but they haven't completely ended it. Serious jealousy, anger and self-destruction here, made more heartbreaking with Vecchio there to watch it happen over and over. The final conversation at the end packs so much in just a few sentences.
Excerpt... )

New Toys (Due South, Fraser/Kowalski, NC-17, 3626 words, written for kink_bingo) The title pretty much says it all. What I love about this story is how comfortable and confident they are exploring this aspect of their relationship. No angst in this one!

Name:  [livejournal.com profile] waltzforanight
Website/link to fic:   archive

First DS fic posted:  2009
Full disclosure:  I’m a fan. I list her as a friend and she has beta-read for me.
Pairings:  F/V, K/V, Vecchio/Stella, Fraser/Thatcher, Mike Sweeney/RayK
Other DS/C6 activity: [livejournal.com profile] waltzforanight has written stories for Californication, Flashpoint, Durham County, Wilby Wonderful, Buried on Sunday, The Invisible, and Canadian Actor RPF. She also co-moderates [livejournal.com profile] c6d_universe  with [livejournal.com profile] akamine_chan  and [livejournal.com profile] sionnain .

Style and strengths: [livejournal.com profile] waltzforanight often writes what I will term “porn with plot and character development.” Sex scenes are steamy and an extension/expression of the characters involved. She writes from a 3rd person limited point-of-view and has an uncanny way of expressing a character’s thoughts and feelings, often in the short-fic form.   I also have found that she has a knack for building a fic around seemingly small but fascinating details.

Some favorites:

sweat baby, sweat baby (Durham County/Due South; "What Else Would You Have Me Be?" verse, Mike Sweeney/Ray Kowalski, NC-17, 303 words)

An intense sex scene is balanced by the way she perfectly captures Mike's vulnerability masked by his tough exterior.  She has also mastered the "show don't tell" writing technique here by creating a captivating visual element.

Sunshine (Vecchio/Stella, NC-17, 300 words) I love the sensuality and tenderness of this piece.

Concentric Spirals (Fraser/Vecchio, NC-17, 1622 words) The character voices are absolutely perfect in this humorous, sweet, sexy piece about a seemingly unlikely topic.

Code Words, Diva Fits and Unexpected Arrivals: A Date in Three Cliches (Fraser/Thatcher)  This is not a pairing I shipped before I read this tongue-in-cheek piece.  Between the excellent, humorous characterizations and the surprise cameo, this piece is wonderful from beginning to end.

Website/link to fic: http://kellie.mrks.org/. Also available at the Due Slash Archive.
Fanlore page: tbc
First DS fic posted: 1999.
Full disclosure: A fan. Kellie was among the first (if not the first) DS writer I read.
Pairings: Mostly F/K, but also F/V/OFC and F/OMC. Other C6D crossover pairings.
Style and strengths:
That these stories, written between 1999-2003, still get heavily recced is testament to Kellie's talent. She writes fantastic romance and angst (and not without humor), as well as screen-melting hot porn. But ultimately what I love about Fraser/Kowalski in these stories is the joy they find in each other, whether it's a first-time or established relationship piece. And she truly gets Fraser, through his POV and glimpses into his past: who he is behind the barriers he's put up around himself, and what it takes for him to lower those barriers.
Other DS/C6D activity: Kellie has written some C6D crossovers: DS/HCL, HCL/Tales of the City, Buried on Sunday/Masterminds, Getting Married in Buffalo Jump/Paris or Somewhere (several co-authored with Aukestrel).
Some favourites:
Somewhere Else to Be (DS, AU!F/K, NC-17, 440kb).
The fandoms I had read before this didn't really do AU's, so I didn't know what to expect with a story where Fraser wasn't a Mountie and Kowalski wasn't a Cop. But she captures their essential qualities here to create a wonderful story about two decent, odd, lonely people who find each other.

Excerpt... )

Without a Net (DS, F/K, NC-17, 164kb). Kowalski goes undercover as an Argentine drug lord, seriously. I love Ray-going-undercover fics, and the first half has the plot, action and wackiness to feel like an episode script. The second half is where the NC-17 rating comes in.

Excerpt... )

Northern Comfort (DS/HCL, Fraser/Billy, NC-17, 250KB). The one that made want to see Hard Core Logo so I could find out more about Billy and Joe.

Excerpt... )

Turning (DS, F/K, NC-17, 661KB). The epic COTW/post-COTW story. Fraser deals with the unresolved issues around his mother's murder and his relationship with his father. It has dark elements (including nightmares), but also enough humor and romance to keep it from being too angsty. This story also has one of my favorite "first kisses."

Inducement (DS, F/K, NC-17, 38KB).
It's hard to rec a single PWP, so I picked this one for the "statue duty" teasing.

First DS fic posted: 2007
Full disclosure: I track Brigantine1's fic like a hawk!
Pairings: F/K, R/R, F/V
Style and strengths: Brigantine does sweet, and funny, and heartbreaking all with equal skill. Check it out: Angst! And Fluff! which makes reading Brigantine a win/win. Her established relationship stories are full of underwritten warmth and care; when she writes first times, the clues drop in delicious morsels. Not only is her Ray Kowalski voice charming and brilliant, she writes Ray through Fraser's eyes brilliantly. She gives her Vecchio delicious snark, while showing us the size of his heart. Her Fraser is most often adorably daffy. She also writes great snippets.
Other DS/C6D activity: A dS/Men with Guns crossover
Some favourites:
Then I Got On This Bus, But I Left My Luggage At The Station, F/K. Watching RayK piece the puzzle together is a thing of joy, here.
A brief excerpt )
It Never Really Was About the Car, F/V. Fraser stays up all night watching Starsky and Hutch. Great RayV voice, complete with snark. Adorably loopy Fraser.
A brief excerpt )

Leeward, Benton Fraser/Brian Larsen. This is a follow-up fic to [livejournal.com profile] aerye's 9.30 to Yellowknife, which broke Fraser but good. I really needed this story. A brief excerpt )

Keeping Kowalski, Ray/Ray. Okay, so this is a total cheat, because Brigantine1 posted this story just after I'd finished writing the profile. I have to add it, though, because it is made of hearts and WIN and cookies! A brief excerpt )

Website/link to fic: Estrella's due South fanfiction, her fic on DSA
Fanlore page: Estrella on fanlore
First DS fic posted: 2004
Full disclosure: Estrella was kind enough to beta for me a few times back when I was a newbie
Pairings: Fraser/Kowalski, Kowalski/Vecchio, Kowalski/Frannie, Kowalski/Billy Tallent, Kowalski/Stella, Kowalski/Gardino, Frannie/Welsh, gen.
Style and strengths: Estrella's character voices are spot-on. She writes humour and tension and hawt porn, and she's a mistress of the bickering-as-foreplay genre. She often includes action and/or references to cases, which help ground her fic in canon.
Other DS/C6D activity: Estrella has also written two Men With Brooms fics (one a crossover with Hard Core Logo), and one Wilby Wonderful story. Her C6D fic is on her Other Fandoms page.
Some favourites:

Mr. Cool (F/K)
I think this was one of the first of Estrella's stories that I read, and I adore it. It was written for the Fraser Fucks Up challenge on [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction, and it shows a Kowalski who's tough and irritable and smart, and a Fraser who... fucks up. :-)
Excerpt. )

All Talk Ray/Ray
Snarking and sex. <3
Excerpt. )

Lipstick (F/K)
Porny pornish porn! Established relationship. Summary: "Work just didn't get any better than this. He'd get to hang out with Fraser all night, in a strip club, guarding a porn star, and get paid to do it."

Author Profiles: Zoetrope

Fanlore page: Zoetrope's fanlore.org wiki page
First DS fic posted: 2004?
Full disclosure: I'm just an admirer
Pairings: Fraser/Kowalski
Style and strengths: Zoetrope is no longer active in the Due South fandom, hasn't been since ca. 2006, but she's left us some terrific pieces of fanart. She's an amazing multimedia artist and a very good fic writer. She's like the queen of animated icons and even if you think you don't know her, you probably have seen some of them. She has a great and justified rep as a vidder (none in Due South fandom though). As for her comics, they're a real treat to enjoy over and over.
Other DS/C6D activity: Zoetrope has written a Fraser/Billy Tallent story and she has made icons for Hard Core Logo, Twitch City and Wilby Wonderful.
Some favourites:

This is Where We'll End It (R, F/K, comic in 30 parts)
This one starts with the fight of Mountie on the Bounty. It's got everything you need in a Due South story: angst, slash and a happy ending. And a lot of pretty pics. A great job of adapting a ton of screencaps to write an original story as a comic (look out for the villain in part 25!)

Twelve Ways to Make Ray More Canadian (G, F/K, comic in 12 images)
Made for [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse during the 2004 dSSS, this is another example of the same technique in another genre: pure fluff and crack.

DUE SOUTH PARK (PG, F/K, gif)
Don't get distracted by the pics, you MUST click on the link near the end of the post to get to watch this hilarious PWP in form of an animated image. Somewhere in the frozen North, horny!Fraser resorts to desperate means while sleepy!Kowalski just wants to sleep.

The Curse of the Great Dawson Double-Douglas Fir Telescoping Bank Shot (NC-17, F/K, 5 parts, medium length)
"Ray, Fraser, a deaf wolf, a film crew, and one improbable shot." I have a peculiar fondness for this story because of its title and because of the use she made of this canonical shooting feat.

First DS fic posted: 2004
Full disclosure: China_shop and I were fandom newbies together and have been on each other's flists for years. We often beta for each other and I <3 her greatly, so I am in no conceivable way objective.
Pairings: Ms. Shop was a diehard Fraser/Kowalski shipper when she first started writing in dS, but later branched out to Ray/Ray and then F/K/V and most recently Fraser/Vecchio and Fraser/Vecchio/Elaine. She's written other dS pairings, too, and also writes Hard Core Logo and Canadian actor RPS.
Style and strengths: I've already copped to being far from objective about China_shop's fic -- she writes like I wish I could, building entire stories on character insights and letting conflict unfold from the interactions of the principals in each fic. But the things I admire most, I think, are her attention to detail, her ability to mess with narrative structure and the way she writes humanity into the crackiest of premises (even the one with the duck).
Other DS/C6D activity: China_shop's Canadian Actor RPS is locked at the comm [livejournal.com profile] tinhat_valley; you can join the comm to see the fic. She moderates many dS communities and challenges, including this one, and organizes an annual New Zealand con, [livejournal.com profile] get__together.
Some favourites: [Note - China_shop is incredibly prolific and incredibly good, so choosing three favourites was impossible. I chose three stand-out examples of her writing at its best, instead; on another day, I would probably have picked three different ones.]

10 Reasons to Hate Ray Kowalski by Raymond Vecchio (due South, Ray/Ray, explicit, 16,900 words). In which there is a nonlinear structure and magic realism, but also a seriously heartbreaking story about Vecchio's struggle to find his way back to himself.
"Vecchio!" he insisted, shoving me against the wall with a thud, knocking the air out of me. Maybe knocking some sense in. His eyes were dark, like he was worried. Like he cared. "You're one of the good guys, remember? Remember that?"

Leaving Normal (due South, Fraser/Kowalski, 3377 words). This is an older story, but it's still one of my fandom favourites. Ray and Fraser are both gorgeously flawed and human, here, and I love Ray's voice. And see, this combination: Ray's apartment proving what a fucking mess Ray's life is, and Fraser being a superhero whose main superpower is figuring stuff out, and Ray's body letting on how turned on he is. This combination fills Ray with a deep awful dread, so that he knows, he just knows things can not go well here.

Soft Arithmetic (due South, Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio, explicit, 5000 words). F/K/V futurefic in which Ray and Ray take Fraser in. The first F/K/V I ever loved, and still one of my favourites.
All of a sudden, this wasn't a game anymore. Ray felt bad, having even thought of seducing Fraser like it was a sport. This was Fraser. He needed them. And it looked like maybe, just maybe, he'd finally realised that.

Author Profile: Sionnain

Author: Sionn ([livejournal.com profile] sionnain)
Website: [livejournal.com profile] sionnain_fics is her main site. She is also archiving fan fiction here and she has a fandom blog here.
Fanlore page: TBC http://fanlore.org/wiki/Sionnain Thank you to  dewey3067
First DS fic posted: October 2008
Full disclosure: I suppose I am not completely unbiased, as I found Sionnain's Due South fanfiction before I found anyone else's, discovered that people write Ray/Ray, and now LJ Due South fandom is stuck with me.
Pairings: Sionnain is an enthusiastic Ray/Ray shipper, who has also written Fraser/Vecchio/Kowalski, Fraser/Vecchio, Kowalski/Stella/Vecchio, and Kowalski/Mike Sweeney in her Due South/Durham County crossover stories.
Style and strengths: Sionnain usually writes longer stories, but has also written shorter pieces and drabbles. One of her greatest strengths is in her ability to consistently and accurately capture the voice of the characters she’s writing, both in her use of dialogue and her story exposition. Sionnain’s stories are often sensual and sexual, with optimistic and happy endings, but she doesn’t shy away from writing angst. Sionn has also made vids and fanmixes, and recorded podfics.
Other DS/C6D activity: Sionnain has written widely in the C6 fandoms, including Hard Core Logo, Battlestar Galactica, Durham County, Last Night, Twitch City, Suspicious River, Slings and Arrows, and Flashpoint.

Some favorites:

No Sudden Moves and No Regrets (due South, Vecchio/Kowalski, PG-13, about 3500 words)

This is a sentimental favorite of mine, as it’s the first Ray/Ray story I read. Sionnain balances humor, snark and romance perfectly.

Grocery Lists (due South, Fraser/Vecchio/Kowalski, PG-13, an image-heavy media-fic)

Not only does this piece always make me laugh out loud, it also demonstrates sionnain’s talent for voice, as the story is told entirely (and the characters portrayed completely accurately and cleverly), through a series of scrawled notes.

were no crime (due South, Fraser/Vecchio, R, about 3000 words)

I love this story; how the romance develops so naturally from the friendship between Ray and Fraser, and how the characters are so well-drawn, with Ray’s exasperation and Fraser’s uprightness. I also love how Sionn used setting in this story; Chicago emerges almost as another character.

Unfettered (BSG, Leoben, Kara, PG, about 2000 words)

That missing scene between Kara and Leoben in the series finale? Sionnain wrote it beautifully, capturing two of the show’s most tricky characters and providing some much-needed closure.

And Watch the Clock Ticking Slow (Last Night/Durham County, Patrick Wheeler and Sadie Sweeney, PG-13, about 3600 words)

A brilliant blend of two very different fandoms, and a character study that’s wonderfully bittersweet.
